Jimmy Carter’s charity urges ‘agonizing but essential reflection’ after Rayshard Brooks’ death in Atlanta

(CNN) Former President Jimmy Carter’s charity on Tuesday said “America should pertain to grips with its long history of systemic racism” in a forceful statement following the fatal shooting last week of a black guy by an Atlanta police officer and weeks of protests against racial oppression and cops brutality across the country.

” The death of yet another African American male, Rayshard Brooks, at the hands of cops in Atlanta recently when again emphasizes that America should come to grips with its long history of systemic bigotry and guarantee complete regard for and protection of the human rights of all, as established in our Expense of Rights and the Universal Statement of Human Rights,” the Atlanta-based Carter Center stated in a launched statement.
The statement follows Brooks, 27, was shot dead by an officer at a Wendy’s drive-thru in Atlanta after cops transferred to handcuff him for believed driving under the impact, according to videos from the scene. The occurrence followed weeks of national demonstrations requiring an end to systemic racism and authorities reforms following the recent deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor
” Throughout our nation’s history, extreme use of force against African Americans by cops and others has continued with impunity. In our own city and state, current killings and the failure of the state to prosecute criminals of anti-Black violence have shocked the country and triggered special grief to Georgians currently reeling from the killing of Ahmaud Arbery and the uncomfortable acknowledgment that racially motivated attacks are prevalent in the U.S.,” the Carter Center stated.
” While Black Americans have lived this reality for hundreds of years, lots of other Americans are only just confronting this unpleasant violence due to video evidence that brutally lays bare the injustices that have actually long existed,” the statement continued, including that “now is the time for deep and often unpleasant, however essential reflection – followed by collective action.”
Carter said in a declaration following Floyd’s death last month that “silence can be as lethal as violence,” and gotten in touch with Americans in positions of “power, privilege, and ethical conscience” to eliminate racial discrimination.
” Individuals of power, opportunity, and moral conscience must stand and state ‘no more’ to a racially prejudiced police and justice system, immoral financial variations between whites and blacks, and government actions that weaken our unified democracy. We are responsible for creating a world of peace and equality for ourselves and future generations,” he said at the time.
” We require a federal government as excellent as its people, and we are much better than this.”
Previously Tuesday, President Donald Trump took his first concrete actions to deal with the growing nationwide protest in revealing an executive order that, to name a few steps, produces a federal database of policeman with a history of using excessive force.
The order comes as Democrats and Republicans on Capitol Hill are working to advance 2 competing cops reform costs, with the Democratic legislation going even more in a number of respects by prohibiting chokeholds and no-knock warrants.
The Carter Center included Tuesday that “as a worldwide company based in the United States, we lament that real equality has not been achieved in our country.”
” As we work in solidarity with local and national partners, we will continue to seek their wisdom to ensure that all of our programs reflect an understanding of history.”
