In June, Boston Red Sox slugger J.D. Martinez accidentally captured a bull shark while fishing off the Florida coast with former MLB gamer Mike Napoli. They released it back into the water after reeling it in.
On Sunday, he told press reporters the bull shark provided quite the difficulty:
” He was strong. He kicked my butt. It was in fact funny. We’re sitting there and we were capturing tunas. And then suddenly this bull shark comes out of nowhere and simply slams one of our tuna. And we’re hooked up on this huge, old bull shark and we’ve got ta battle him. It was type of enjoyable. It was a great time. We let him go safe and sound. It was absolutely nothing incorrect with it.”
Martinez said it might have been his biggest catch ever, but noted he does not really believe sharks count “as a fish you catch.”
Catching a bull shark is no joke. They can weigh anywhere in between 200 and 500 pounds, per National Geographic, and are thought about aggressive and extremely hazardous because they’re most likely to attack human beings compared to other sharks.
So yeah, quite the catch.
